2014 Vintage Back Block Shiraz, Petersons Family Wines

When Black Key recently caught up with a member he shared his frustrations around finding a gift for his father's upcoming birthday. When we asked "what would does he really love?" our member said "Wine! But you can't get his favourite wine anymore, anywhere."

That was all we needed to hear, what ever it is, challenge accepted!

Clearly his father has great taste, from the more than 60 wine regions in Australia, and more than 2500+ vineyards producing an uncountably large number of different wines, his fathers favourite wine is Peterson's Black Block Shiraz is very special, rich and full bodied Hunter shiraz.

Peterson's Back Block Shiraz is a single vineyard, old vine wine, which relies heavily of mother-nature to provide perfect conditions allowing the vines to grow the best quality grapes to make Back Block. Recent years the wine hasn't been made due to the smoke taint from the NSW fires, and to much rain followed by too little rain.

Peterson's Family Wines is a favourite of Black Key, Colin Peterson has been producing stunning wine since the early 1980s. The business has grown and now includes Peterson House (sparking wine specialist), Savannah Estate (Colin's daughter) and two Peterson's Hunter Valley cellar doors. The original locations at the vineyard in the rolling hills of Mount View, the second one on Broke Road in the heart of Pokolbin where our good friend Kathryn in the cellar door manager.

Contacting Kathryn, the Pokolbin cellar door manager, we called on every day of our 20 year relationship to see what it would take to get a couple of Back Block, "a small miracle" was Kathryn's reply, but said "leave it with me and miracles are my speciality too".

The next day Kathryn called back with great news, she'd convinced Colin Peterson himself to take two bottles out of his personal cellar for your client. But even better, rather than the requested 2016 vintage, Col suggested we take the 2014, one of the best vintages they'd ever produced.

By chance we were in the Hunter Valley a few days later and able to collect the wines from Kathryn at the Cellar Door for our member personally, and have a Peterson's tasting while we were there, it would have been rude no to.

Thanks again to Kathryn and the Petersons team for allowing us access to the private cellar and securing this pair of Back Block wine.
